2006: BEREN CHALLENGES MCDERMOTT TO DEBATE

Meeting in Auburn, Washington on April 29, 2006, the King County (Washington State) GOP Convention adopted its platform and certified Steve Beren as its candidate for U.S. Congress in the 7th Congressional District against Democrat Party incumbent Jim McDermott. Beren addressed the delegates in the morning, and in the afternoon was named on 78 of 81 ballots cast by delegates.  For excerpts from the Steve Beren speech, CLICK HERE

The very next day, April 30, 2006, Beren and some campaign supporters attended a public meeting held by McDermott at Meadowbrook Community Center.  Beren and his supporters arrived early, distributing campaign flyers to everyone in the crowd before McDermott even arrived.

McDermott spoke at length on a number of subjects, repeatedly emphasizing his claim that Republicans in Congress were avoiding a debate over Iraq and Iran, and that such a debate was vital for the American people.  Towards the end of the meeting, Beren was recognized during the question and answer period, saying that he agreed with the idea of a debate between Republicans and Democrats over Iraq and Iran.

“I’m the Republican candidate, and you’re the Democratic candidate,” Beren said.  “So let’s debate.  Between now and November, how many times?  When and where?”

McDermott asked Beren if he was an official candidate.  Beren said yes, noting that he had been certified by his party and had filed with the Federal Election Commission.  Then, McDermott asked Beren if he had secured financing for his campaign.  “Not as much as you,” Beren responded.

Regarding the challenge to debate, McDermott said “we’ll see,” and went on to the next question from the audience.  In view of the non-committal answer, the Beren for Congress campaign continued to press McDermott for an affirmative response during the course of the 2006 campaign.
